Quit like a woman

17.01.2026

She's making a list .. checking it twice. The current trend of improving at everything all the time is not sustainable. If like me, you get tired of reading about how to get better in 3 steps .. then maybe it's time for some spring cleaning .. in 3 steps. πŸ˜…

There is so much you can do in a day or a lifetime.

Not everything we do is good for us.

If you want to have space for growth.. you need to make space.

  1. Make a list of all the things you do ..
    ‍
  2. Mark the things that:
    ‍
    β€’ don't make you happy
    β€’ don't move you forward
β€’ keep you busy but not challenged
    ‍
  3. Quit them.

‍

These might not be big things.. I am not talking about quitting your job.. I am talking about quitting stuff like: saying yes to everything. Or prioritizing work over your health.

πŸ“– To help you embark on this journey I can recommend the book "Quit Like a Woman" by Holly Whitaker.

Even though it's mainly about quitting alcohol.. the book is rooted in the tech community and is full of other relatable issues we might all be facing. Especially if you are a woman in tech.

Here you can read why quitting the bad stuff is so hard. The world does not want you to change. You might lose friends, colleagues or yourself in the process. But then find yourself again :D

For me personally I understood that making it to sports in the evening was not just a matter of strong will.. but a matter of how to better organize my day. There is a finite amount of will power available in the day.. and if work is all about tough decisions.. then in the evening there is no more energy for a decision.

So if I wanted to make it to sports.. I needed to reorganize my whole day and maybe plan all my sports activities a week ahead.

Oh.. and for more will power.. more protein for breakfast!

πŸ’ͺ Remember, if you cannot help yourself.. it's pretty hard to help others.

What is something you do at work that you would like to quit, but fear our work culture is against you?
